this was the greatest post i ever made in my blogging career
So yeah, normally I wouldn’t post at great length like this on here, but this is something I feel pretty strongly about. With a post like this, I really think his argument is fundamentally off and kind of disturbing; he disagrees with a lot of those pro-gay campaigns because he believes they promote the idea of the ‘gay stereotype’, when in most cases they just promote the idea of being yourself, addressing the fact that the gay community is as varied a group as any, not letting anyone bring you down because you’re gay and just opposing the general message of hate.
And so what if there are some people do act, well, gay? That ‘gay stereotype’ genuinely exists as a personality in our society and that’s just the way some people are. I don’t think people (this mostly goes for “straight-acting” gay guys) have the right to judge guys like that. I know there are a lot of people who don’t groove too hard with more feminine gay guys, but it’s not up to them to change who they are to conform to a less confrontational image of male homosexuality. Maybe this attitude is indicative of a larger issue? To go and formulate these kinds of ultra-critical opinions of other gay guys and how they live their lives and interpret the idea of ‘pride’ seems to me like it usually stems from a feeling of being insecure about ones own sense of masculinity / sexuality, especially for members of the gay community.
Reading this, I don’t think he understands the bottom-line idea of ‘pride’. I don’t know, this kind of stuff is really what divides the gay community; a lot of the time ‘straight acting’ gay guys and the people who formulate these kinds of opinions don’t realize how much unspoken advantage they have in the ‘real world’ where straight people maintain the dominant cultural hegemony, how much harder it is for people who don’t always act masculine and act like your typical guy, and how little change or progress people make in this kind of struggle by ‘acting straight’.
Also, I think it’s really not a great thing to be denouncing pro-gay campaigns especially when you consider the most important demographic they’re aimed at in this day and age; little kids who are just starting to figure themselves and their sexuality out in super conservative and fucked up and hateful areas of the world where they feel like they have to weigh the decision of whether or not it’s in their best interests to kill themselves just to escape the pain of being persecuted for being different. Just a thought.
